Villanova still No. 1; Duke returns to Top 25

Grayson Allen’s bank-shot lay-up through contact a fraction of a second before the buzzer gave Duke a stunning, hard-fought 63-62 win over the seventh-ranked Virginia Cavaliers Saturday evening.

The Blue Devils will get a chance to prove their four-game winning streak is for real when they visit North Carolina on Wednesday for the latest chapter in the historic rivalry.
It was a sudden turn of fortunes after guard Malcolm Brogdon flipped in a shot from the lane with his back to the basket with 9.9 seconds to put the Cavaliers in the lead.
“We didn’t do a good job of getting possession in the middle third of the game and had some lapses on defense and when you play a team like Duke they will take advantage”, High Point head coach Jon Torpey said. Virginia has lost 17 consecutive games at Duke. Bennett said the problems Ingram created showed up on the boards, where Duke outrebounded the Cavaliers 24-10 in the second half. Virginia finished just 2-of-11 from three, as Brogdon went just 1-of-6 and junior guard London Perrantes, who leads the nation in three-point percentage, according to Ken Pomeroy, did not attempt a single trey. The Blue Devils played their 1,000th game at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Saturday’s win, improving to 844-156 at the venue. “He made Allen hit a hard shot”, Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. It is rare that all 4-5 of their shooters will be off on the same night, but if they are, Carolina will run the Blue Devils out of the gym due to their inability to score inside. A portion of the team will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Challenge Feb. 19-20, while others will travel to the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Millrose Games in NY, N.Y., Feb. 20. What I’m saying is we are looking for a 40-minute game of Duke basketball with whomever we have available.
NOTES: This is the only regular-season meeting between the teams….
The Duke Blue Devils were unranked for the first time in eight years, causing many to write this season off as one that will end with an early-round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma stayed at No. 3, North Carolina also rose four spots to No. 4, and Maryland fell to No. 5 following its home loss to Wisconsin. All except Notre Dame, which is the only team among those six whose remaining games are against teams that combined have a losing conference record.
“We weren’t terrible in the games that we lost”, Krzyzewski said. He tied the game at 44 with a bomb and gave Duke its biggest lead, 51-44, with another. This may be a bit of a surprise to some people, but Matt Jones will provide consistent play throughout the game and lead the Blue Devils in scoring.
On Tuesday, it will be two Big 12 games as No. 10 West Virginia is at No. 24 Texas and No. 13 Iowa State is at No. 25 Baylor.
