The show is performing strongly for CBS, but it seems that there was still a need for change.
But just because the co-creators of "The Good Wife" are taking over showrunning responsibilities for the freshman drama, it doesn't mean there was necessarily anything wrong with Dee Johnson.
CBS announced that executive producers Robert King and Michelle King will take over "The Good Wife" as Dee Johnson departs. The Kings don't have a lot of experience in television outside of creating "In Justice" and "Judy's Got a Gun," but that's why Johnson was brought in to begin with.
The idea was to quickly hand over showrunning responsibilities to the Kings, with Johnson making sure they knew exactly what they were doing. The move is similar to what CBS did with "Cold Case," allowing Shaun Cassidy to run the show before giving control to creator Meredith Stiehm, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"The Good Wife" is doing well for CBS on Tuesday nights. It might be the lowest-rated show of the evening, but it also follows two of the network's biggest powerhouses "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles." Both shows are averaging a 12.0 rating/19 share and a 10.4/16, respectively, in overnights, while "The Good Wife" is averaging an 8.9/15.
However, "The Good Wife" has been finishing in the top 10 network shows each week, finished ninth last week with an 8.6/5. It was the network's fifth-highest rated show last week behind the two NCIS series as well as "CSI" and "The Mentalist."
The show has already received a full-season order from CBS and airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on the network.
