Listeria found in cheese; recalls by Sargento, Meijer, others

Meijer is also recalling its Meijer brand colby and colby jack cheeses that are sold exclusively through its deli counters.
Routine testing found listeria in a sample of Amish Classic Colby deli horn cheese. The manufacturer of the recalled cheeses, Indiana-based Deutsch Käse Haus, is instructing all wholesalers and retailers to discontinue selling their existing stock of Amish Classic Colby deli horns distributed by MDS Foods under the Amish Classic label, as well as selected lots of Meijer’s Colby-jack deli horn cheese.Affected products include Meijer Mini Horn Colby Jack, UPC number 2-15927-00000-6 and Meijer Colby Mini Horn, UPC number 2-15938-00000-2. Sargento has also recalled a few other products packaged alongside the possibly affected cheese. There have been no known illnesses reported. The investigation is ongoing. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can lead to Listeriosis. Also recalled are lot numbers 110316V02, 110316V03 and 110316V04.The products were solid in Meijer stores from November 10, 2016 to February 9 exclusively at the deli counters.
