Zika virus: Brazil deploys 2 lakhs soldiers to warn of risks

Health personnel, soldiers and other civil servants participating over the weekend in Brazil’s “national mobilization” against the Zika-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquito visited 2.86 million homes, the government said Monday.Brazil late on Friday said it was investigating the potential link between Zika infections and 4,314 suspected cases of microcephaly, a condition marked by abnormally small head size that can result in developmental problems.Meanwhile, researchers have confirmed over 460 cases of microcephaly in Colombia, 41 of which had evidence of a Zika infection. In Brazil, with the Olympics looming, the president says Rio de Janeiro will be a priority when it comes to efforts to eliminate Zika. The presence of the Zika virus in Brazil won’t compromise the Olympics in August, President Dilma Rousseff vowed on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) as soldiers went door-to-door across the country to share key tips on how to stem the outbreak.
